10 Questions to Ask Your Photographer Before Hiring

Choosing a photographer isn’t just about finding someone with a nice camera — it’s about finding someone who can capture your story with artistry, professionalism, and care.

Whether you’re a parent booking senior portraits or a senior planning your dream session, asking the right questions will ensure you invest in a photographer who delivers not only beautiful images, but also an unforgettable experience.

Here are ten questions to ask before you make your decision:

1. What is your photography style?

Every photographer has a unique approach. Some are light and airy, others bold and dramatic. My work at Optical Poetry leans toward cinematic, fine-art portraits, with bold color and composition designed to look timeless on your walls. Ask your photographer to describe their style and make sure it matches the vision you have for your portraits.

2. Can I see a full gallery from a recent session?

Instagram feeds and websites show highlight reels. A full gallery shows consistency — how your photographer handles lighting, posing, editing, and storytelling from start to finish.

Here are a few examples from the Class of 2025: Tyse Brooke

3. Do you help with styling and outfit choices?

Outfits can make or break a session. The right photographer should guide you through colors, textures, and accessories that flatter you and fit the location. I love helping clients build a wardrobe that feels both authentic and elevated. I also have a great makeup artist who has been working with my clients for 8 years that I would be happy to refer you to.

4. How do you choose locations?

From historic downtown McKinney to hidden fields or modern cityscapes in Dallas, location sets the tone. Ask whether the photographer suggests spots, secures permits, or tailors the setting to your personality. At your in-person consult we will go over my album of 30+ locations that I've curated over 10 years. You will see examples of my photography in each location and choose which ones fit the vibe you are going for.

5. What products do you offer beyond digital files?

Digitals are great, but portraits truly shine when they’re printed. High-end photographers (like me!) offer wall art, albums, and fine-art prints designed to last for generations. Ask about heirloom options so your memories don’t get lost on a hard drive. Just ask yourself where the pictures you saved on a floppy disc, or even a CD are today!

6. What’s your retouching philosophy?

Editing should enhance, not erase. I believe in polishing skin tones and colors while keeping you you. My goal is for you to look like you would on your best day, think "I woke up like this" energy. Ask your photographer if they lean toward natural edits or heavy retouching.

7. How do you handle posing and direction?

Most people feel awkward in front of a camera — and that’s okay! A skilled photographer gives clear direction to help you look natural and confident. Someone who is just starting out may not have the skills to pose you to look your best. Ask how they work with clients who feel shy or stiff.

8. What’s included in your session fee?

Photographers structure pricing differently. Some charge only for the session and sell products later; others include digitals in the fee. Be sure you understand exactly what’s included so there are no surprises. My senior packages for the Class of 2026 include a specific number of digitals as well as an album with the 2+ hour experiences.

9. How far in advance should I book?

Senior season fills up quickly (especially fall in Texas when the weather is golden!). Most of my clients book 4–6 months ahead to secure prime dates. Ask about your photographer’s booking window to avoid disappointment.

10. What makes you different from other photographers?

This is the big one. For me, the answer is simple: I create artful, high-end portraits that tell your story in a way you’ll be proud to display in your home. Ask your photographer what sets them apart — their answer should make you feel excited and confident in your choice.

Final Thoughts

The right photographer isn’t just someone with a camera — it’s someone who understands your vision, makes you feel comfortable, and delivers heirloom-quality portraits you’ll treasure forever.
