When Is the Best Time (Month/Season) for Senior Photos in North Texas?

One of the first questions I get from seniors and parents is: “When should we schedule senior photos?”

The truth is, there isn’t just one perfect answer — but there are definitely months and seasons in North Texas that work better than others. Between the Texas heat, school schedules, and the beauty of our changing seasons, timing your session can make all the difference.

Here’s my guide to choosing the best season for your portraits.

🍂 Fall (September – November): The Most Popular Choice

If I had to choose one word for fall in North Texas, it would be golden. The light is warm, the weather is comfortable, and nature gives us those deep, rich colors that look stunning in portraits.

  • Pros: Gorgeous golden-hour sunsets, cooler temps, fall leaves, no summer humidity frizz.

  • Cons: This is prime “senior season,” so my calendar books up months in advance. Plan early!

❄️ Winter (December – February): Chic and Underrated

North Texas winters are mild compared to other parts of the country. While you won’t find snowdrifts, you’ll get clean, crisp backgrounds and soft light that’s perfect for a modern, editorial look.

  • Pros: Neutral colors make your outfits pop; sessions are quieter and less rushed.

  • Cons: Shorter daylight hours; trees are bare (though this doesn't matter if you choose an urban or indoor location)

🌸 Spring (March – May): Fresh and Vibrant : 2nd Most Popular Choice

Spring brings new life, blooming flowers, and lush greenery. It’s perfect if you love soft, romantic portraits with color and freshness.

  • Pros: Wildflowers (bluebonnets, anyone?), pastel tones, mild weather.

  • Cons: Weather can be unpredictable with rainstorms — but reschedules are always possible. I work plenty of extra days into my schedule so you can be easily moved if the weather doesn't cooperate on your date, so don't sweat it.

☀️ Summer BEFORE (June – August): Bright and Bold

Summer in Texas is hot — no way around it. But if you don’t mind braving the heat, summer offers long evenings and radiant sunsets that make for dramatic images. Plus, it’s perfect for seniors who want photos before school starts. Personally, I don't recommend summer because it takes away from the fun experience when you are miserable, but for those who are determined to check senior portraits off the list before senior year gets rolling, there are some pros.

  • Pros: Vibrant skies, plenty of time for sessions since school isn’t in session, bold outdoor looks.

  • Cons: High heat, potential sweat/makeup challenges.

My Personal Recommendation

For the classic North Texas senior portrait look — glowing light, perfect temps, and timeless backdrops — fall is my #1 pick, ideally October. But if you want a more unique, editorial edge, winter can be equally stunning. Spring is always a client favorite for its color and softness, plus if you want flowers, this is when they are gorgeous!

Final Thoughts

The best time for senior portraits depends on your style, your schedule, and your vision for the final artwork. Whether you imagine golden fields in October, wildflowers in April, or bold skies in July, I’ll help you plan the perfect session that feels uniquely you.
